1.) Firefighter Killed Fighting California Fires The California wildfires have claimed their first firefighter victim. The firefighter, Steven Rucker of Marin County, is the 20th person to die in the fires, which as of today have claimed 650,000 acres and destroyed nearly 2,500 homes. Rucker was killed when the wind, which has made fighting the blazes across the state so treacherous, suddenly changed direction and engulfed a fire truck that held him and three other firefighters. One of those men is in critical condition with burns over 28 percent of his upper body. View Full Story

2.) Are Emergency Responders Willing and Able to Respond? A recent study of 5,000 healthcare-based emergency responders such as doctors, nurses and emergency room technicians uncovered some interesting facts: many hospitals have no idea if their workers were able to respond to an emergency situation (trained to an emergency response plan) or if they were even willing to respond to an emergency. According to researcher Robyn Gershon, MHS, DRPH, a professor at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, a surprising number of responders said they would not be able or willing to respond to certain emergencies. 3.) Fire Training Simulator Causes Explosion The International Association of Fire Fighters has issued a warning following a serious malfunction of a fire training simulator manufactured by Fireblast 451 Inc. of Corona, Calif. Several fire fighters from Portland, Maine Local 740 escaped serious injury when the training simulator malfunction caused an explosion. The fire fighters were operating in full protective clothing and advancing a hoseline as part of the fire attack when the explosion occurred. The operator of the training simulator immediately shut the evolution down and the fire fighters exited the trailer. View Full Story
