Congressman Calls for Investigation of EPA's ‘Neglect and Lies’ Following 9/11 The former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency discusses the inability of first reponders to communicate with each other due to the challenges of interoperability among communication systems. James Lee Witt says he has seen the devastation and felt the heartache and pain that disasters can cause. Underutilized Responders New Study Examines Hazards and PPE Needs for First Responders A new report prepared by RAND at the request of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health pinpoints some of the situations in which emergency responders face the greatest risk and the gaps in the development of the technology crucial to saving their lives. "Emergency responders face a wide range of serious hazards in their jobs," state the report's authors, "which places them at high risk for occupational injury or death. This risk is mitigated by their using various forms of personal protective technologies (PPTs), such as protective garments, respiratory protection, environmental monitoring and communications equipment, and practices and protocols that focus on safety." New Firefighter Accountability System Unveiled A new product unveiled by Motorola at the 2003 Fire-Rescue International Conference, Aug. 22-25, at the Dallas Convention Center could prove to be a lifesaver for some first responders. The mobile Fireground Communications System provides on-scene, automated personnel monitoring for firefighters. At the conference, members of the Tulsa Fire Department discussed the beta test they conducted of the mobile communications system.
