Nearly $1 Billion in Grants Earmarked For Fire Fighter, Police and Other First Responder Communication U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez and U.S. Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael Chertoff have launched $968 million in Public Safety Interoperable Communications (PSIC) Grants to help state and local first responders improve public safety communications and coordination during a natural or man-made disasters. 2. Fatal Firefighter Heart Attacks Preventable, Says NIOSH Heart attacks and other heart-related conditions are the most common cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities, but the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) asserts that such deaths can be prevented. 3. Nano Materials Used to Produce Ultra-Strong, Bullet-Proof Products A new subsidiary of ApNano Materials Inc. will develop and manufacture the company's new NanoArmor, line of nanotechnology-based bullet-proof products. The new subsidiary will start with products that enhance the performance of personal safety items such as bullet-proof vests and helmets, and will continue with protection products for vehicles and aircraft.
4. DHS Launches New Council to Support Infrastructure Protection Mission The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Infrastructure Protection recently chartered the State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial Government Coordinating Council (SLTTGCC) a key component of the Department’s unified approach to protecting tcritical infrastructure and key resources (CI/KR) outlined in the National Infrastructure Protection Plan. 5. Meridian School District Installs Crisis Management System to Protect Students and Staff Meridian Joint School District (Joint School District No. 2) in Meridian, Idaho, has installed the Rapid Responder Crisis Management System to protect 50 school sites in the district. The district received a $355,922 Emergency Response and Crisis Management Grant from the U.S. Department of Education in August 2006 to help improve its campus emergency preparedness and crisis management capability. 6. Companies Partner to Develop Medical Countermeasures for Nuclear and Radiological Threats Osiris Therapeutics and Genzyme Corp. have formed a partnership to adapt a leading stem cell therapy as a countermeasure to nuclear terrorism and other radiological emergencies. The initial focus of the partnership will be to develop Prochymal, a formulation of adult stem cells derived from bone marrow, to treat the potentially lethal complications of acute radiation syndrome (ARS).
